The legendary action star and former California governor celebrates his 65th birthday today. Born July 30th, 1947 in Thal, Austria, Schwarzenegger is best known for his role in a variety of action movies during the 80's and 90's. Rather than focus on his acting career, we will take a look at the impact he has had on the sport of bodybuilding as well as the influence he's had on the health and well-being of the world.

For bodybuilding, Schwarzenegger brought a popularity to the sport that had never been seen before. His charisma, humor, and self-confidence set him apart from the other competitors. These traits brought interest in an otherwise unknown and often, misunderstood sport. During his bodybuilding career, his key achievements included five Mr. Universe titles and seven Mr. Olympia titles.

Using his fame and recognition from bodybuilding, he launched his acting career. From this, he became a worldwide superstar and leveraged his popularity to get others involved with fitness and healthy living. Schwarzenegger served as chairman of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports (now known as the President's Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition) from 1990 to 1993. Years later, he served as Chairman for the California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. This type of work and leadership is evident in the film Kindergarten Cop where he teaches children the importance of physical exercise and promotes eating healthy.

This post is a mere scratch on the surface but we thank Mr. Schwarzenegger for all the work he has done from amazing us with his biceps, to entertaining us with his one-liners, to teaching everyone the importance of exercise and nutrition.
